Since this shutter is made from composite, the natural question is how it is made - was it injection molded into some weird shape? How does it look on the back? Those questions are important for how authentic the shutters look. The raised panel design is constructed from multiple pieces in the manner of a wood shutter. That is, the frame of the shutter has rails and stiles (made of the composite material) that are assembled with high quality tongue and groove joints. The raised panel is also attached to the frame through a tongue and groove. So even if you look at the shutters up close - close enough to see the joinery through the paint - the shutter will look like a real wood shutter. The only real difference is the material. The composite material is NOT WOOD, and a number of the misinformed reviewers here think it's "cheap particleboard" because composite materials don't behave like wood in certain ways. First of all, it's wood fibers suspended in a resin, so the material isn't as hard to the touch as wood is. You can gouge out a pretty ugly groove with a flat head screwdriver on this material, if you aren't careful, and this is why some reviewers think it's cheap. They couldn't be more wrong. The material is basically indestructible to water, rotting, and sun damage, and that is what you care about for shutters. There's nothing cheap at all about these shutters. Finally, with regard to the back, the raised panel has the raised face on the front and it is flat but not flush on the back. However, since the panel is joined to the frame of the shutter with a tongue and groove join, the back of the center panel simply recessed in the frame. You could say the front of the shutter is a raised panel design, and the back is a recessed panel design. It is VERY UNFORTUNATE that ekena didn't bother taking a picture of the back of this shutter. If you wanted to make real functional shutters, which you can with these, the shutters will look fine. Other reviews incorrectly suggest that the back of the shutter is totally flat - that would be really ugly, and I'm glad to report that they were not clear enough.
